The drama unfolding around our planetary climate crisis turns to Cochabamba, Bolivia this week. After the failure of nation states to negotiate a legally binding treaty in Copenhagen in December, Evo Morales, president of Bolivia, has convened The World Peoples Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth during Earth Day week April 19-22. It will be an opportunity for the peoples of the world, grassroots social and environmental movements, and civil society at large to come together to voice a vision that could actually save the planet. Converging on Cochabama are some of the best minds, visionaries, and activists Norm Chomsky, Naomi Klein, José Bové, Eduardo Galeano, Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibbon, and Maude Barlow to name a few. As well as scientist James Hansen, actors Danny Glover, Robert Redford, and Susan Sarandon, and James Cameron, the director of Avatar.
Bing Gong, serving as correspondent in a 'new media' collaboration between EON, Wiser Earth and Transition West Marin, will be sending back reports on the events at the conference, doing interviews with the people involved, and his impressions. He will be joined by Claire Greensfelder - activist and campaigner. Their mission in going to Cochabama is to put the spotlight on this historic global grassroots and indigenous convergence on behalf of the planet.
